Do you own a motor car that was released more than 30 years ago and is no longer manufactured? Classic car insurance would be ideal. If it can be classified in the category of collector cars, your vehicle is however subject to a technical inspection and must be registered.
Which cars are considered collector’s vehicles?
It is not enough to own an old car for it to automatically fall into the category of classic cars .
Since 2010, a classic car must be at least 30 years old . It must no longer be manufactured and in the event of restoration, it must be identical to its original design .
However, a car that has taken part in an important historical event can also be considered as a collector’s car criterion , regardless of its age, like any car designed for competition and with a glowing track record.
What registration for a vintage car?
To be officially considered a collector’s car, the vehicle must be associated with a specific registration certificate (ex-carte grise) . To get it,
To obtain it, you must contact the French Federation of Vintage Vehicles (FFVE) specifying the characteristics of your vehicle:
- brand
- model
- year of release
- power
- serial number
- chassis number
- Seating places
To this information, you must attach:
- proof of identity
- proof of residence
- 2 photos of your vehicle
- the old gray card or a certificate of sale attesting that you are the owner
- a check (the cost of your gray card corresponds to a tax of 1CV which varies according to your region + a management tax of €4 + a delivery charge of €2.76.)
If it is not exempted, you must also send the FFVE a report of technical control of less than 2 years .
After studying your file, the FFVE will send you your collector’s registration document by post within 4 to 8 weeks .
Be aware that when a car has a “collection” registration certificate, it is almost impossible to then obtain a classic certificate, unless you pass complex and costly tests with the DRIRE.
Do classic cars have to pass a technical inspection?
Since 2009, vintage vehicles have been subject to a compulsory technical inspection . On the other hand, this one is lightened compared to a normal car since it is done every 5 years. However, this facility can only be offered to cars whose registration certificate mentions the fact that it is a collector’s vehicle.
Finally, it should be noted that collector vehicles, like all other vehicles, must be covered by car insurance . However, it is strongly recommended to take out cover adapted to this type of vehicle: collector car insurance
